1472-1800

Biology is incorporated in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ingolstadt; Botany exists in the form of Pharmacognosy (Herbology).

1800 – 1826

the university takes up residence in Landshut for a short period.

1826

Relocation to Munich, incorporation of the biological institutes in the royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich; Anthropoloy and Zoology remain in the Faculty of Medicine.

1865

Botany leaves the Academy and moves to the Botanical Garden (consisting of Garden
conservatorium, the Herbarium, the Institute of Plant Physiology and the Botanical laboratorium) on Karlstrasse in Munich.

1869

Anthropology separates from the Faculty of Medicine.

1886

Germany’s first chair for Anthropology (Johannes ranke) is established in Munich, with the goal of obtaining archaelogical evidence for a comprehensive portrait of humans from the prehistoric times until the present. Ranke bequeathed his private collection, the beginnings of the Anthropological collection, to the State of Bavaria.

1891

Relocation and construction of the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Institutes to the Menzingerstrasse in Nymphenburg, under direction of Karl Eberhard von Goebel.

1914

Opening of the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Institutes with the Herbarium (later the Botanical State collection)

1925 – 1958

Karl von Frisch chairs the Zoology division in the Academy (the zoological collections are used in teaching at this time).

1932

Zoology moves to a new institute on luisenstrasse (built with funds from the rockefeller Foundation).

1945

The Zoological State collection, which had separated from the university institute already
before it left the Academy, is temporarily housed after the war in Nymphenburg palace

1965

the Faculty of Biology is granted a chair for Genetics (Fritz Kaudewitz), which is established in a new institute on Maria-Ward-Straße in the northern section of Nymphenburg palace.

1977

Inauguration of the Anthropological State collection on Karolinenplatz.

1980

A chair for Microbiology is established as an institute on Maria-Ward-Straße, Nymphenburg palace.

1986

Inauguration of the modern facility for the Zoological State collection in Münchhausenstraße in Obermenzing

2003 & 2004

Reorganization of the Faculty of Biology from the institutes to 2 departments. Move of the Department Biology II into the first part of the Biocenter, build as part of the Hightechcampus Martinsried.

2008

After completion of the second construction phase, the Biocenter unites the majority of the research divisions on one campus; Systematic Botany remains on location at the Botanical Garden, and Didactics in the Winzererstrasse.
